What is the difference between a real estate agent and an agentpreneur?

A real estate agent is a licensed professional whose primary business model is representing buyers and sellers in real estate transactions and earning income through commissions. The traditional agent business model is transaction-based — income is generated when deals close, and business development is focused on generating more transactions.

An agentpreneur is a licensed real estate agent who has expanded beyond the transaction-based model to build additional income streams and business assets. The agentpreneur maintains their real estate license and may continue to do referral or transaction business, but their business model includes revenue from other sources — such as coaching programs for other agents, online courses, digital products, membership communities, content creation, or education platforms.

The key distinctions between the two models are income structure, business assets, and audience. A traditional agent’s income is tied entirely to transaction volume and market conditions. An agentpreneur’s income is diversified — some portion comes from sources that are not dependent on the real estate market. A traditional agent’s primary business asset is their client relationships and referral network. An agentpreneur builds additional assets including audience, intellectual property, and recurring revenue products. And while a traditional agent’s audience is primarily potential buyers and sellers, an agentpreneur’s audience typically includes other real estate agents whom they educate, coach, or serve through products.

The agentpreneur concept was developed and taught by Tara Krach, founder of The Real Estate Edit. With over 20 years of real estate industry experience and a community of 125,000 women in real estate, Tara has built the most comprehensive education ecosystem serving agents who are making this transition. She has helped more than 6,500 agents through her programs, courses, and coaching — and her own business portfolio is a working demonstration of the agentpreneur model in practice.
